Pregnancy, Chiropractic, and Pain
So many people think Chiropractic is ONLY for back pain and many think it is dangerous to have done while they are pregnant.
Not True!!
While Chiropractic is GREAT for back pain, neck pain, and headaches (to name a few) in ANY PERSON of ANY AGE... it is also a fantastic way to help pregnant women. If you think about it for a minute, what is a common thing people know about being pregnant... you can’t take medications (including common headache and back pain relievers).
So what is a woman to do when her belly is sticking out so far she can't see her feet and because her center of gravity is so far off balance she has to arch her back even further to stop her from falling over? This change in posture can quickly irritate the low back as well as cause back and neck stiffness and Chiropractic can help.
Unlocking the Power of the Webster Technique: A Revolutionary Approach to Chiropractic Care For Pregnany.
Chiropractic care has been a transformative field of healthcare, and over the years, various techniques have emerged to address specific conditions and improve overall well-being. One such technique that has gained significant attention is the Webster Technique. Developed with a focus on pregnancy and pelvic alignment, the Webster Technique offers a unique approach to chiropractic care that can have profound effects on both expectant mothers and their unborn babies.
-
Origins and Development
The Webster Technique was pioneered by Dr. Larry Webster, a renowned chiropractor, in the 1970s. Driven by a desire to enhance the pregnancy experience and optimize birth outcomes, he developed a specialized technique that focuses on balancing the pelvis and addressing intrauterine constraint.
The Concept of Intrauterine Constraint
Intrauterine constraint refers to any factors that can disrupt the normal positioning and movement of the baby inside the womb. This can be caused by pelvic misalignments, tight ligaments, or other imbalances within the maternal body. The Webster Technique aims to identify and correct these issues to promote a more ideal environment for the developing baby.
Targeting Pelvic Misalignment
Central to the Webster Technique is the correction of pelvic misalignment, specifically focusing on the sacrum and its relationship with the uterus. By applying gentle chiropractic adjustments and mobilization techniques, the technique aims to restore balance and optimize the neuro-biomechanical function of the pelvis.
-
Balancing the Pelvis for Optimal Alignment
Through a series of chiropractic adjustments, the Webster Technique aims to restore balance to the pelvic structures. By addressing misalignments, asymmetries, and tension in the pelvic bones and ligaments, the technique helps create an optimal environment for the baby's growth and positioning.
Restoring Neurobiomechanical Function
The Webster Technique also focuses on optimizing the neuro-biomechanical function of the pelvis. By improving nervous system communication and enhancing joint mobility, the technique can alleviate tension and create space within the pelvis, allowing the baby to assume a more favorable position for birth.
Encouraging Fetal Positioning
In addition to balancing the pelvis, the Webster Technique encourages proper fetal positioning. By creating a more spacious and aligned pelvic environment, the technique increases the likelihood of the baby assuming a head-down position, known as the "vertex" position, which is considered ideal for a smoother delivery.
-
Pregnancy-Related Conditions
The Webster Technique can be beneficial for expectant mothers experiencing various pregnancy-related discomforts such as back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain, and pubic symphysis dysfunction. It offers a non-invasive and drug-free alternative to alleviate these discomforts and promote overall wellness.
Fetal Malpositioning
When a baby is not in the optimal head-down position for birth, it is referred to as fetal malpositioning. The Webster Technique is often employed to address this issue by creating an environment that encourages the baby to naturally assume the vertex position, reducing the need for interventions and increasing the chances of a smooth delivery.
Pelvic Misalignment
Pelvic misalignment can affect not only the mother's comfort but also the baby's positioning. The Webster Technique effectively addresses pelvic misalignment, allowing for optimal alignment of the pelvic bones and ligaments. This can have a positive impact on both the mother's well-being and the baby's development.
-
Promoting Safer and Easier Deliveries
By addressing pelvic misalignment and promoting optimal fetal positioning, the Webster Technique may contribute to safer and easier deliveries. It can potentially reduce the need for interventions and improve birth outcomes.
Reducing the Risk of Complications
A well-aligned pelvis can decrease the likelihood of complications during labor, such as prolonged labor, stalled labor, or the need for a cesarean section. The Webster Technique aims to minimize these risks.
Enhancing Overall Pregnancy Wellness
Beyond childbirth, the Webster Technique can contribute to the overall well-being of pregnant women. By relieving discomfort, improving pelvic alignment, and supporting the body's natural functions, it can enhance the pregnancy experience.
-
Initial Assessment and Examination
Before applying the Webster Technique, a chiropractor will conduct a thorough assessment and examination. This evaluation helps identify any misalignments or dysfunctions that need to be addressed.
Specific Chiropractic Adjustments
Based on the assessment, chiropractic adjustments are administered to correct pelvic misalignment and restore balance. These adjustments are tailored to the individual's specific needs and are safe for both the mother and the baby.
Recommended Frequency and Duration of Care
The frequency and duration of Webster Technique care vary depending on the individual's condition and progress. Chiropractors will provide personalized recommendations to achieve optimal results.
-
Research and Clinical Studies
The Webster Technique has been researched extensively including clinical studies.
Expert Opinions and Success Stories
Many healthcare professionals, including chiropractors, midwives, and obstetricians, recognize the value of the Webster Technique. Success stories from mothers who have undergone this technique further support its effectiveness.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Like any healthcare intervention, the Webster Technique has potential risks and contraindications. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced chiropractor, the risks are minimal, and the benefits generally outweigh them.
Now remember, NO MEDICATIONS! Should you suffer? No Way!
Chiropractic is not only good for the overall wellness lifestyle (people who enjoy life pain free and great health; naturally), it is also great for pregnant women to get rid of their back pain, neck pain, headaches, and to minimize morning sickness.
Adjustments simply help put the spine and pelvis into proper alignment to take the pressure off of the nerves which are usually causing the pain. After everything is lined up properly, the muscles can relax, and everything functions better.
-
Although many women wait until pain comes on, or they think 'I feel fine, I don't need Chiropractic', they are making a big mistake.
Getting adjusted before, during, and after pregnancy not only prevents pain from coming on and keeps pain away, but also encourages proper mobility of the pelvic bones. The three bones in your pelvis need to be as mobile as possible to be able to expand during labor and delivery while the baby is descending.
Also, if your nervous system is being compromised because of a misaligned vertebra and/or a pinched nerve and your body is creating this human being, doesn't it make sense that you would want this baby to have your full nervous system potential?
-
Regular Chiropractic care throughout your pregnancy helps encourage faster labor and delivery by promoting more mobile and looser pelvic bones.
To give you the best chance of quick labor, Dr. Parsons will evaluate your spine and develop a treatment plan for you to follow throughout the pregnancy. Typically a healthy woman with minimal spinal misalignments is recommended to get adjusted once a month for the first 6 months, 2 times per month for her 7th and 8th months, and every week thereafter until delivery. (This schedule is not for women needing the Webster Technique, which indicates a different treatment schedule.)
